Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Harry Potter films receiving 4K Blu-ray release

Warner Bros. has announced that the Harry Potter saga is set for a release on 4K Blu-ray this year.

Blu-ray.com is reporting that March 28th will see the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire following later in 2017.

Each Combo Pack will cost $44.95 and features a 4K Hdr Ultra HD Blu-ray version of the film, complete with DTS:x audio, along with a Blu-ray disc and Digital HD versions. The special features will be available in HD, and are the same »

John Hurt, Oscar-Nominated Star of ‘The Elephant Man,’ Dies at 77

John Hurt, the wiry English actor who played a drug addict in “Midnight Express,” Kane in “Alien,” the title character in “The Elephant Man,” and Winston Smith in “1984” has died. He was 77.

He died on Wednesday at home in Norfolk, his widow, Anwen, confirmed in a statement to Variety. Hurt had disclosed in 2015 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Anwen wrote as a tribute, “John was the most sublime of actors and the most gentlemanly of gentlemen with the greatest of hearts and the most generosity of spirit. He touched all our lives with joy and magic and it will be a strange world without him.”

Mel Brooks, executive producer of “The Elephant Man,” tweeted that he was a “truly magnificent talent.”

‘Harry Potter’ 4K Blu-rays Coming in Reverse Order

The Wizarding World is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in a big way this year with today's announcement that all eight Harry Potter films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint will be getting the 4K Blu-ray treatment.

Warner Bros. is releasing the Harry Potter 4K Blu-rays in two separate waves. The first wave drops March 28th and includes Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

Wave 2 is scheduled for an unannounced release date later this year and includes Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Location manager Michael Harm dies aged 51

Experienced location manager worked on World War Z, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Harry Potter and Match Point.

UK-based location manager Michael Harm has died unexpectedly in London aged 51.

Harm, who was born in the Netherlands and moved to the UK in the early 1990s, started his career on BBC mini-series You, Me and It before working on features such as Restoration, Bent and My Son The Fanatic.

Harm served as unit manager on UK hits including Elizabeth, Notting Hill, Dirty Pretty Things and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, before taking on location manager duties for Woody Allen duo Match Point and Scoop.

In 2009 he served as location manager on Jane Campion’s Cannes competition entry Bright Star and Rob Marshall’s musical-romance Nine.

In 2011, Harm renewed scouting for the Harry Potter franchise on Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and in the following year took on Disney juggernaut Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

‘Rogue One’ Beats ‘Assassin’s Creed’ to Top Global Box Office

Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” has opened with $31 million in China during the Friday-Sunday weekend, driving the tentpole to $914.4 million in worldwide box office.

The eighth “Star Wars” movie topped the international chart with $56.6 million during the weekend. That was 25% above Fox’s video game adaptation “Assassin’s Creed,” which took in $45 million from 10,487 screens in 68 markets.

Rogue One” now has $437.1 million internationally to go along with a domestic total of $477.3 million, the eighth-largest of all time. China is already the sixth-largest international market, trailing only the U.K. with $73.3 million, Germany with $41.2 million, France with $33.2 million, Australia with $32 million, and Japan with $31.4 million.
