Storyline

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as "human computers", we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes. Trivia

On the day that the scene was filmed in which Paul Stafford (Jim Parsons) is speaking to the NASA engineers in the Space Task Group office about needing to develop the math for re-entry, there was an extra face in the crowd. Mark Armstrong, son of Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, had been invited by actor Ken Strunk to have a cameo appearance in the scene, and joined the other actors representing the NASA engineers. Goofs

It would seem that most all of the scenes involving vehicles were shot at one time with the same assortment of cars -- despite location -- appearing throughout the film, including a bright red Metropolitan sedan. Because these are all doubtless collector pieces leased for the film, all are in perfect, spotless condition, regardless of age. Further, a number -- including a blue '57 Thunderbird -- do not change position in the NASA parking lot despite shots being days, weeks, or months apart. See more »

Exceeded my expectations!
15 January 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The performances by Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe,and Kevin Costner were compelling. Taraji P. Henson was superb. The story line is remarkable and that it is based on a true story makes it so meaningful.

Aside from the fact that I thought it was well made, strong story line and fantastic chemistry between these characters, it may have resonated more with me from the professions they help, their individual self respect for self and one another, and how they looked beyond their perceived lot in life. To the really life women who the story is about, how courageous you all were and how important was your work. So very happy this story was told in such a tasteful, factual way.
